On Wednesday, August 18, a government owned FM radio station in Kampala played ‘Balaba taliwo,’ a Buganda Kingdom praise song banned on radio stations.
But, as fate would have it, authorities instead went for Radio One’s sister Luganda station, Akaboozi ku Bbiri. But after crosschecking at Synovate (former Steadman), records showed that a government –owned station had actually played the song.
We have been told that since then, Akaboozi General Manager, Maria Kiwanuka, has ordered presenters of programmes, which don’t use playlists, to record all the songs they play on air.
Akaboozi was one of the four radio stations switched off during last September’s protests in Buganda, after government blocked Kabaka Ronald Mutebi from visiting Kayunga district. Sapientia, Suubi and CBS were also switched off. Akaboozi, Sapientia and Suubi were reopened but CBS remains closed.
